John Ehlke - Captain of Carats

Hello and welcome! I’m John — your friendly neighborhood gem enthusiast and the heart behind this shop. My love affair with jewelry began long before I could spell “gemologist.” As a kid, I was mesmerized by my aunt’s bold mine‑cut diamond and my mother’s beautifully hand‑wrought sterling flatware. Those early treasures lit a lifelong passion for precious metals and anything that glitters.

In my twenties, I dove into the world of mall jewelry stores. It was exciting, sure — but the pressure to push a sale and rush to the next customer never sat right with me. I’ve always believed jewelry should feel personal, meaningful, and unrushed.

After stepping away from retail, I spent years in the corporate world while earning my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Along the way, I couldn’t resist feeding my gem obsession, so I took courses through the Gemological Institute of America. I’m now working toward my Graduate Gemologist degree (GG), and when I’m not studying, you’ll find me devouring books on jewelry, antiques, tableware… and yes, the occasional spicy romance novel. We all need balance, right?

Home for me is the Driftless region of Wisconsin, with Devils Lake State Park practically in my backyard. Weekends usually mean hiking through bluffs and prairies — rain, shine, or snow. Nature’s colors and textures often sneak their way into my custom designs, inspiring pieces that feel grounded, organic, and uniquely yours.
